A Dream Come True Continues ~
The next major milestone occurred in the fall of 1978 when the corporation received the support of then State Deputy Frank Pulice to conduct a first ever statewide raffle, now known as our Annual awards program. Much to our delight, the first year's gross revenue exceeded $40,000, and the corporation's capital almost doubled.
Our annual award program success has continued over the years to a point where we now net $100,000 or more per year. For investment purposes we purchased apartment buildings in North Hollywood and in Auburn, both managed Brother Knights. these transactions, and the sales of each at a profit, set the stage for our first major venture into a true retirement operation.
In 1986 we purchased our currently operating Marysville Columbian Center from the Diocese of Sacramento. this purchase, together with the significant building improvements that have been made, brings our investment in this facility to well over $1 million dollars. Further, it is our continuing policy to charge very competitive rates for housing and meal service to the benefit of our residents; and, through our Annual Awards program, we have been able to subsidize the operation on an average of some $50,000 annually.
Past State Deputy James J. Moloney was elected our first president. Past State Deputy Frank R. Pulice succeeded him in 1980. Brother Pulice served as president until 1987 when, as Supreme Director, he passed the president's gavel to Fred Pellitier, then retired from the position of Deputy Supreme Knight. In the ensuing years the Marysville mortgage has been retired,and the corporation has over $1.5 million in liquid assets.
The support of each succeeding California State Deputy and his corps of officers has played a significant role in our success. It has been the practiced of the administration that as a man is elected to the high office of State Treasurer he automatically becomes a member of the Board of Directors and continues to be on the Board as State Secretary, State Deputy and the Immediate Past State Deputy. Many of these officers have continued to serve on the board following their years as a State Officer.
